Sara Gilbert

30+ years of experience

Sara Gilbert is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist (HCPC registered) who works with adults across a broad range of psychological difficulties, including anxiety and mood disorders, interpersonal and relationship difficulties, and the impact of trauma. Her approach is grounded in CBT and also draws on ideas from newer “third wave” therapies, including DBT-informed work where that fits the person and the problem. She is trained in EMDR and uses this where appropriate, including when distressing experiences or memories continue to shape how someone feels, copes, and relates to themselves.

Alongside this general adult work, Sara’s longstanding specialist focus is eating disorders and obesity, and the wider psychology of eating, weight, body image and self-worth. She brings extensive NHS specialist experience to this area, including her role as Consultant Clinical Psychologist and joint service lead of a specialist community eating disorder service, where she provided clinical leadership, managed a multidisciplinary team, liaised with inpatient services, and represented the service across local systems.

Sara has also made an extensive contribution to the field through publications, teaching and public-facing work. She is the author of multiple books on eating and weight-related difficulties, including Counselling for Eating Disorders and Therapy for the Eating Disorders (3rd edition), as well as books exploring the psychology of dieting and eating. Her publications also include peer-reviewed research and invited chapters and reviews on eating, obesity and treatment approaches, and she contributed to professional guidance connected to the British Psychological Society’s work on understanding eating disorders.

Alongside academic and clinical writing, Sara has a long history of communicating psychological ideas to the public. She contributed regularly to Slimming Magazine over many years, worked as a consultant clinical psychologist for an online diet platform, and has been included on the British Psychological Society list of psychologists available to advise journalists on dieting and eating disorders. She has also taken part in TV and radio interviews, bringing an evidence-based, humane perspective to topics that are often discussed in overly simplified ways.
