Nicholas Messing
25+ years of experience
Nicholas Messing is a Counselling Psychologist and Parent-Infant Psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience, the majority of which has been spent in the NHS. He has worked across adult, child, family, and parent–baby services, serving as a clinical lead and supervising teams of psychologists and psychotherapists. This breadth of clinical and leadership experience enables Nicholas to work effectively with individuals, couples, and families, with a particular focus on supporting and improving relationships.
Nicholas specialises in supporting parents with their own mental health, new parents as they build relationships with their babies, and couples navigating the challenges of partnership and parenting. Therapy may take place individually, as a couple, or with a baby present, depending on what best meets the needs of the family. His expertise in relational dynamics helps clients gain clarity, insight, and practical strategies for creating stronger, healthier connections.
He describes couples counselling as “a framework to understand how each member of the couple sees the other, how they expect the other to behave, and how this relates to their own background history.” This approach allows couples to deepen their understanding of themselves and each other, and to work towards more supportive and fulfilling relationships.
Nicholas is trained in a range of therapeutic approaches, including Couples Counselling, Psychodynamic Therapy, Psychotherapy, and Family Therapy. This breadth allows him to draw on both depth-oriented and relational models of therapy, helping clients explore long-standing patterns while also building tools for change in the present.
Clients describe Nicholas as warm, thoughtful, and reflective. He works within a psychodynamic framework to help clients make sense of their current distress by placing it in the context of their whole life story, while providing a safe space where emotions can be expressed, faced, and accepted. Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, his goal is always to support clients in developing healthier, more connected relationships with themselves and others.
