Eye Movement Desensitisation (EMDR)

At Hampstead Psychology, we offer EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)—a powerful, evidence-based treatment for trauma, PTSD, and distressing life experiences. EMDR helps clients reprocess difficult memories, reduce emotional distress, and regain a sense of psychological balance and control.

How EMDR Therapy Works to Heal Trauma

When traumatic or overwhelming experiences are not fully processed, they can become “stuck” in the nervous system—triggering emotional or physical reactions long after the event. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) while you safely recall aspects of a distressing memory. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory so it no longer feels threatening or intrusive. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR does not require you to describe the memory in detail. The focus is on helping your brain heal naturally—reducing symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, shame, or emotional numbing.

What EMDR Can Help With

Our team of experienced clinical psychologists uses EMDR to support professionals and individuals dealing with:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma or neglect

  • Health-related trauma

  • Work-related stress or critical incidents

  • Panic attacks and anxiety

  • Low self-esteem or shame rooted in past experiences

  • Complex trauma or attachment difficulties

Private EMDR Therapy with Expert Psychologists in London

EMDR is particularly helpful for high-functioning professionals who appear “in control” on the surface but continue to be affected by past experiences. It offers a discreet, efficient, and highly effective way to resolve trauma—without months of retelling or analysis. Our psychologists are trained in EMDR and experienced in working sensitively with complex trauma in a professional, confidential setting.
