Therapy for PTSD and Trauma

Trauma can leave lasting effects — even long after the event has passed. If you're struggling with flashbacks, anxiety, nightmares, or a sense of being constantly on edge, you're not alone. Therapy can help you feel safer, calmer, and more in control again. At Hampstead Psychology, we offer specialist therapy for PTSD and trauma-related difficulties — in clinics across London or online.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is your mind and body’s response to overwhelming or frightening events. These may include:

  • Accidents or medical emergencies

  • Violence, abuse, or assault

  • Childhood neglect or emotional harm

  • Loss, grief, or sudden shock

  • Birth trauma or medical trauma

  • Ongoing stress or threat

Everyone responds to trauma differently. It’s not about how “big” the event was — if it affected you deeply, it matters.

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after trauma and may involve:

  • Flashbacks or nightmares

  • Feeling constantly alert or jumpy

  • Avoiding reminders of what happened

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating

  • Feelings of shame, anger, or guilt

You may also have Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), which can result from prolonged or repeated trauma — often in childhood or close relationships.

We tailor treatment to each individual, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches including EMDRCognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and other specialist therapies. Or see other pages related to trauma here anxiety, grief and bereavement and depression.
