Dr Caroline Douglas-Pennant

20+ years of experience

Dr Caroline Douglas Pennant is an experienced Counselling Psychologist who has worked and studied in the field of mental health for over 20 years. She completed her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology before undertaking a post-doctoral Master’s degree in Systemic Therapy, developing advanced expertise in working with families, couples, and relational dynamics. Alongside her private practice, Caroline is a Principal Psychologist within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), where she supports young people and parents presenting with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

Caroline works with teenagers, adults, and couples, and has particular expertise in trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. In her private practice, she runs a busy couples counselling service, drawing on her specialist training to help partners improve communication, strengthen emotional connection, and work through complex relational challenges. She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and has significant experience supporting individuals impacted by single-incident and developmental trauma.

Her therapeutic work is informed by a wide range of evidence-based psychological approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Behavioural Activation, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), EMDR, Family Therapy, Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Reminiscence Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Couples Counselling, and Systemic Therapy. This breadth allows Caroline to tailor therapy carefully to each client or couple, integrating different models to meet their specific needs and goals.

Caroline has a particular interest in working with teenagers and couples, creating a calm, safe, and collaborative space in which difficulties can be explored thoughtfully and without judgement. Clients often describe her as compassionate, reflective, and practical, with a style that combines warmth and empathy with clear structure and evidence-based interventions. Her focus is on helping clients develop insight, emotional resilience, and practical tools that support lasting change.
