Harriet Goldenberg

30+ years of experience

Harriet Goldenberg is a highly experienced Counselling Psychologist with over 30 years of clinical practice. She began her therapeutic career by establishing one of the first fertility counselling services within the NHS, an area that has remained an enduring strand of both her clinical work and intellectual interest. Alongside this, Harriet’s practice has always been grounded in general psychotherapy with individuals and couples, supporting people through a wide range of life challenges and transitions.

Harriet later undertook specialist training as an Existential-Phenomenological Psychotherapist, an approach that closely reflects her understanding of the fundamental struggles, questions, and uncertainties that people encounter across the lifespan. Her work is deeply informed by existential and philosophical thinking, with particular inspiration drawn from Martin Buber, Viktor Frankl, Emmanuel Levinas, Hannah Arendt, and R. D. Laing. This philosophical grounding shapes a reflective and relational way of working that attends carefully to meaning, identity, responsibility, and lived experience.

Canadian and Jewish by birth, Harriet has developed a longstanding professional interest in experiences of marginality and minority identity. Intercultural work forms an important part of her practice, with sensitivity to the ways culture, belonging, difference, and experiences of “otherness” shape psychological wellbeing and relationships.

Alongside her clinical work, Harriet developed and continues to facilitate a workshop titled A Stranger in a Strange Land, which explores experiences of foreignness, displacement, and not belonging. This workshop has run successfully in both Canada and England for over 20 years and reflects her sustained engagement with themes of identity, difference, and human connection.

Harriet’s therapeutic style is thoughtful, relational, and deeply respectful of each person’s unique life context. Therapy is offered as a collaborative space for reflection and meaning-making, supporting individuals and couples to engage more fully and authentically with their lives.
