ADHD and How Therapy Can Help

Living with ADHD

Everyone struggles with focus or organisation sometimes — but if distraction, restlessness, or impulsivity are affecting your daily life, you might be experiencing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
At Hampstead Psychology, we offer evidence-based therapy to help you understand your ADHD, build effective coping strategies, and create a life that feels more balanced and fulfilling.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD isn’t about laziness or lack of effort — it’s a difference in how the brain manages attention, motivation, and self-regulation. These differences can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming, but with the right support, people with ADHD can thrive.

You might experience:

  • Difficulty concentrating or staying on task

  • Feeling easily distracted or forgetful

  • Restlessness, fidgeting, or feeling “on the go”

  • Acting quickly without thinking

  • Trouble with time management or organisation

  • Feeling frustrated or self-critical about “not getting things done”

ADHD affects both children and adults, and it can show up differently in everyone. Understanding your unique pattern is the first step toward change.

ADHD is not a character flaw — it’s a recognised, treatable condition.

How Therapy for ADHD Helps

We tailor therapy to each individual, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – to identify unhelpful thinking patterns, improve focus, and develop practical strategies for organisation and follow-through.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – to help you manage frustration, self-criticism, and perfectionism, and stay connected to what really matters.

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) – to quiet the inner critic and build a kinder, more supportive relationship with yourself.

In ADHD therapy, we’ll help you:

  • Understand how ADHD affects attention, emotion, and motivation

  • Learn tools to manage distraction, procrastination, and impulsivity

  • Build routines that support your strengths

  • Develop self-compassion and confidence in your ability to succeed

  • Turn insight into practical changes in daily life

What to Expect

  • Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly

  • Available in-person across our London clinics or online

  • Therapy is always tailored to your needs, goals, and pace

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin — we’ll work together to make sense of your challenges and build strategies that work for you.

Take the First Step

ADHD can feel frustrating or overwhelming — but with the right support, it’s possible to feel more in control, confident, and capable.
