Dr Alex Fowke
20+ years of experience
Alex trained as a Clinical Psychologist and has over 20 years of experience working in the NHS across a range of mental health settings, predominantly in multi-disciplinary teams serving populations of working-aged clients with complex and severe mental health difficulties. He has a long history holding psychology leadership roles and is currently the operational lead for a Complex Emotional Needs (formerly ‘Personality Disorder’) team in North London. He also works part-time in an academic setting training the next generation of clinical psychologists and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.
In his clinical practice Alex works with individual clients over the age of 18 and is confident working with clients across a range of clinical presentations, particularly mood and anxiety disorders, as well as those struggling with more complex relational difficulties and troublesome patterns of behaviour. With his experience working with complex presentations, he is skilled in working in a flexible and integrative manner, drawing on a range of evidence-based models recommended by the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) to best support his clients in working towards their goals.
Using his warm and welcoming manner, as well as his honesty, humour and compassion, Alex creates a safe and relaxed environment for clients, balancing a structured, goal-driven approach with appropriate attention and more intensive reflection on the therapy process and the underlying relational patterns than exist within the therapeutic relationship.
He has a core training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and his skill and competence is evidenced through 13+ years of continuous accreditation as a CBT practitioner, supervisor and trainer by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). His clinical practice is informed by more third-wave CBT approaches including dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as well as compassion-focussed approaches. Alex is also a fully-trained EMDR practitioner and offers this approach for clients presenting with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Alex works both online and in-person in clinic rooms based in Hampstead.
