Cognitive Analytic Therapy

What is CAT Therapy?

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is a structured, time-limited therapy that helps you recognise and change repeating patterns in how you relate to yourself and others. CAT integrates cognitive and relational ideas, with a clear focus on understanding what keeps difficulties going and building new ways of responding. At Hampstead Psychology, we offer CAT therapy in Hampstead and Marylebone, London, as well as online across the UK and internationally.

How CAT Works

CAT is based on the idea that current emotional difficulties are often shaped by earlier experiences and coping patterns that once made sense, but can become limiting over time — especially in close relationships or under pressure. Working collaboratively with your psychologist, you’ll map out these patterns, understand how they developed, and notice how they show up in day-to-day life. CAT provides a clear structure for making sense of cycles that repeat, and practical ways to shift them, so change is grounded in both insight and action.

What CAT Can Help With

CAT can be helpful for relationship difficulties and interpersonal conflict, low self-esteem and self-criticism, anxiety and depression, emotional overwhelm, complex trauma and attachment-related difficulties, perfectionism and people-pleasing, emotional avoidance, and repeating patterns in work or personal life.

Private CAT Therapy with Experienced Psychologists

CAT can be a good fit for high-functioning individuals who feel stuck in familiar patterns, even when they understand what’s happening and have tried hard to change. We offer CAT therapy delivered by experienced clinical and counselling psychologists, providing a confidential, reflective space where therapy stays focused and helps the work move forward.
