Sara Gilbert

30+ years of experience

Sara Gilbert is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist registered with the HCPC. She works with adults experiencing anxiety, mood difficulties, trauma, interpersonal and relationship difficulties, and problems connected to eating, weight, body image, and self-worth. She supports clients who want to understand the patterns affecting their wellbeing and develop more effective ways of coping, relating to themselves, and moving forward.

Alongside her broader adult work, Sara has longstanding specialist expertise in eating disorders and obesity, including the wider psychology of eating, dieting, weight, body image, and self-esteem. She brings extensive NHS specialist experience to this area, including her role as Consultant Clinical Psychologist and joint service lead of a specialist community eating disorder service. In this role, she provided clinical leadership, managed a multidisciplinary team, liaised with inpatient services, and represented the service across local systems.

Sara has made a substantial contribution to the field through publications, teaching, and public-facing work. She is the author of multiple books on eating and weight-related difficulties, including Counselling for Eating Disorders and Therapy for the Eating Disorders, as well as books exploring the psychology of dieting and eating. Her publications also include peer-reviewed research, invited chapters, and reviews on eating, obesity, and treatment approaches, and she contributed to professional guidance connected to the British Psychological Society’s work on understanding eating disorders.

Her therapeutic work is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and also draws on newer “third wave” approaches, including DBT-informed work where this is clinically helpful. She is trained in EMDR and uses this where appropriate, including when distressing experiences or memories continue to shape how someone feels, copes, and relates to themselves. This allows her to tailor therapy carefully to each client’s difficulties, goals, and circumstances.

Sara’s style is thoughtful, clear, clinically grounded, and practical. She offers a discreet and carefully tailored approach for adults who want therapy to be focused, evidence-based, and useful beyond sessions. She helps clients clarify what they want to change, understand the psychological and behavioural patterns keeping difficulties in place, and develop more effective ways of managing emotions, eating-related patterns, body image concerns, relationships, and self-worth. Her work supports clients to reduce distress, strengthen resilience, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
