Harriet Goldenberg
30+ years of experience
Harriet Goldenberg works with adults and couples facing relationship difficulties, fertility issues, life transitions, identity questions, loss, uncertainty, or a sense of feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. She has particular experience supporting people through emotionally complex stages of life, including questions around family, belonging, meaning, difference, and change.
Harriet is a highly experienced Counselling Psychologist with over 30 years of clinical practice. She began her therapeutic career by establishing one of the first fertility counselling services within the NHS, an area that has remained an important strand of her clinical work. Alongside this specialist experience, her practice has always been grounded in general psychotherapy with individuals and couples, supporting clients through a wide range of emotional, relational, and life-stage difficulties.
Harriet later undertook specialist training as an Existential-Phenomenological Psychotherapist. This approach reflects her interest in the deeper questions that often sit underneath psychological distress, including meaning, identity, responsibility, choice, uncertainty, and the way a person experiences themselves in relation to others. Her work is informed by existential and philosophical thinking, while remaining focused on the real and personal difficulties that bring someone to therapy.
Harriet also has a longstanding professional interest in marginality, minority identity, culture, belonging, and experiences of “otherness”. Canadian and Jewish by birth, she brings sensitivity to intercultural work and to the ways difference, displacement, family history, and social context can shape a person’s emotional life and relationships. She developed and continues to facilitate A Stranger in a Strange Land, a workshop exploring experiences of foreignness, displacement, and not belonging, which has run in both Canada and England for over 20 years.
Harriet’s therapeutic style is thoughtful, relational, reflective, and discreet. She offers a highly experienced and carefully considered therapeutic approach for individuals and couples who want space to explore complex personal, relational, or identity-related questions with depth and seriousness. She helps clients understand what is happening in their lives and relationships with honesty and care, while supporting them to find greater clarity, agency, and a more authentic way forward. Her work offers space not only for understanding, but for meaningful change in how clients relate to themselves, others, and the choices ahead of them.
