Dr Alex Fowke
20+ years of experience
Dr Alex works with adults over the age of 18 who are experiencing anxiety, low mood, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, or patterns of behaviour that feel difficult to understand or change. He is particularly experienced in helping clients who feel stuck in long-standing emotional or relational patterns, including those whose difficulties are complex, intense, or have not shifted through more straightforward approaches.
Alex is a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience in the NHS, working across a wide range of mental health settings. Much of his career has been spent in multi-disciplinary services supporting adults with complex and severe mental health difficulties, giving him significant experience with difficulties that are layered, longstanding, or connected to earlier experiences and relationships. He has held a number of senior psychology leadership roles and is currently the operational lead for a Complex Emotional Needs team in North London.
Alongside his clinical work, Alex also works in an academic setting training future clinical psychologists and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. This combination of senior clinical practice, leadership, supervision, and teaching gives him a strong foundation in evidence-based therapy and sophisticated clinical judgement, particularly when working with complexity, emotional intensity, risk, and entrenched interpersonal patterns.
Alex has core training in cognitive behavioural therapy and has been continuously accredited for over 13 years as a CBT practitioner, supervisor, and trainer by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies. His practice is also informed by approaches including dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and compassion-focused therapy. He is also a fully trained EMDR practitioner and offers EMDR for clients experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Alex’s style is warm, honest, thoughtful, and clinically grounded. He offers a discreet and carefully tailored approach for adults who want therapy to be focused, psychologically sophisticated, and practically useful. He helps clients clarify what they want to change, understand the emotional and relational patterns keeping difficulties in place, and develop more effective ways of responding in daily life. His work balances structure and clear therapeutic goals with careful attention to deeper patterns, supporting clients to build resilience, improve relationships, and move forward with greater clarity and capacity for change.
Alex offers appointments online and in person from clinic rooms in Hampstead.
